Oscars Consider Expanding To Five VFX Nominees
By: Thomas J. Mclean

You know, sooner or later, VFX credits might be given a little more prominance as well. One day......
"The visual effects branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has voted to expand from three to five the number of nominees for the Best Visual Effects Oscar, Variety reports.
If approved by the academy’s rules committee and the board of governors, the change would take effect with the 2011 Oscar ceremony.
The move was approved at the branch meeting last Thursday, amid heated debate on the move, the trade reports. The change was reportedly supported by the Visual Effecst Society and some of the larger visual effects companies. "

Iron Man 2 Ratchets Up A $133M Opening
By: Thomas J. Mclean

Hey, I worked on the Monaco sequence, on the shots where IM is pulled to the floor, gets up, and then starts reeling in Whiplash, before kneeing him in his super-powers. Have you seen the movie yet? If not, skip on, it's pretty good.
"Marvel Studios kicked off the summer movie season in style, with Iron Man 2 soaring to the top of the domestic box office charts in its inaugural weekend with more than $133 million.
Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, Iron Man 2 fell short of the $158 million opening-weekend record held by The Dark Knight, but was good enough for the honor of fifth-highest three-day opening in history."

London 2012 Olympics Short
by AMID
Well, the London 2012 Olympics mascotts have been revealed and to a mixed response (pretty predictable really). I have to say, I like them. They are different, and modern (it is the modern Olympic movement.....). They shall be appearing in various media, so expect some CG loveyness allround in the years ahead....
"The recently unveiled 2012 London Olympic mascots, which are somehow supposed to evoke the spirit of the games, now have their very own animated short. Frankly, the cartoon isn’t as bad as it should be, but to understand why the Olympics chose to represent itself with hideously phallic blobs, listen to what this Olympic official has to say:"

Pixar's Newt
Cancelled!
Newts, so cute, so endangered. Ironic then that this forthcoming title from Pixar, will not be so forthcomming. In fact, it's kind of cancelled. Bummer, I mean really. For anyone out there that has worked on a cancelled project, they'll know just how depressing it can be. All those great designs, models and sets that were due for silver screen magic, will now never see the light of day..... the virtual dust will settle, and Newt will (for most) fade from memory......
"
Earlier this evening I received an email response from Walt Disney Company archivist Dave Smith (or a representative) informing me that Pixar's Newt "has been cancelled". This confirms the rumors that have been swirling around the film in the past few months. When news broke a few hours ago that the film had been deleted from the latest supplement to Smith's Disney encyclopedia Disney A to Z, I emailed
Smith at his public address dave.smith@disney.com:
Hi Dave,
I was just wondering why there's no information on Pixar's Newt in the latest supplement to Disney A to Z? The entry seems to have been deleted.
Best,
Mike Bastoli
Somewhat sneakily, I sent the question from my personal email address with no mention of this blog. "

The 15th Conference On Animation, Effects, Games And Interactive Media Crosses Borders.
by CGSociety
Sounds like there was a pretty good vibe going on. Also good to hear there is a boom due to stereo projection movies (3D to you and me). Gold ole 3D.......
"Early this morning FMX 2010, the 15th Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Interactive Media ended with a booming party. The biggest expert meeting in Europe maxed out capacities for the venue of Haus der Wirtschaft.
On each of the four days way over 3.000 international animation specialists, visitors and young talents from 41 countries rarely found free seats in one of the simultaneous programs in the other ten rooms and had to sit on the floor. You could hardly miss the positive atmosphere of change within an industry that benefits from the 3D stereo boom and the global success of effects movies in spite of the economic crises."

NVIDIA 3D Vision Surround Delayed, ATI Gloats With An Eyefinity Demo Site
By Vladislav Savov

It's not nVidia's year is it? At least in terms of it's gaming market. We really feel they took their eye of the ball in this regard. Too much effort trying to build the computational and simulation market, and not enough on making great visuals for gamers. Now, it seems their 3D display tech has been delayed (at least for those with 3 screens), leaving ATI (AMD) to make a smidge more ground......
"If you're one of the truly lilliputian proportion of PC gamers who actually bought two of either the GTX 470 or GTX 480 from NVIDIA in the hope of running a tri-monitor 3D gorgefest, we've got bad news for ya. If you're anyone else, enjoy the schadenfreude of knowing that those first guys will have to keep waiting for 3D Vision Surround support until the end of June. As NVIDIA tells it, the driver bringing the tri-dimensional, multi-monitor gaming nirvana was targeted for an April release, but has now slipped a couple of months."

Despicable Me To Close Los Angeles Film Festival
By: Thomas J. Mclean

We saw a trailer for Despicable Me a few days back. Really does look like good fun. This year has been pretty stellar so far in terms of 3D anim features (what with How To Train Your Dragon). Lets hope this release adds to the quality stack.... keep em comming ;)
"The Los Angeles Film Festival, which this year is moving to the downtown region, will go out on an animated note.
The festival has announced the Universal animated film Despicable Me will be the closing night film of the festival on June 27.
That will be the world premiere for the stereoscopic 3-D film, which is directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin and features the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russel Brand, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett and Julie Andrews. The film is slated to open nationwide on July 9."

Zack Petroc Studios Creating Concepts For 3D Designs Without A Pipeline In Sight.
Artist Profile by Cindy Miller
Great artwork and sculpts. No need to say anymore really. Read on.....
"Zack Petroc talks about his studio, including the release of new training tools and how recent trends in design sculpts and preproduction have transformed what he does.
Three years ago when Zack Petroc first launched his studio, the majority of his time was spent creating 3D models for specific production pipelines. This meant animatable meshes with a long list of exact criteria. While assets for production are still a part of what he does, today the majority of 3D models he creates are done well in advance of knowing what type of production pipeline they will end up in; if they are meant to end up in one at all."
